Apple Announces the iPad

Steve jobs holding Apple's new creation, the iPad.Apple unveiled it’s new tablet computer today, dissapointingly calling it the “iPad.”  <Insert menstrual pad joke here> It looks like a really big iPhone, and it doesn’t have much more functionality than one.    During the cult-like Apple release announcement, Steve Jobs demonstrated how the iPad can be used to buy movie tickets online, watch YouTube videos, and look at photos.   The iPad  is obviously a technological breakthrough of immense proportions.  In between his amazing demonstrations of web browsing and the calendar app, Steve continuously mentioned how beautiful the device is.   I guess you need a unique selling point when your company is 5 years late in releasing a modern tablet.

But can it really be considered a true tablet computer?  The iPad does not have a full OSX implementation; it has no standard ports, It can’t multitask, and its browser doesn’t support flash. It is hardly a tablet pc. So, if you want a big ass iPhone that doesn’t make phone calls and costs 4 times more, head on over to the Apple Store and keep jamming the F5 key until you see one of these bad boys up for sale.

Feds Ban Texting For Bus Drivers and Truckers

Posted by admin On January - 26 - 2010ADD COMMENTS

texting banned for bus and truck drivers“We want the drivers of big rigs and buses and those who share the roads with them to be safe,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood in his statements banning text messaging by commercial truck and bus drivers.  “This is an important safety step, and we will be taking more to eliminate the threat of distracted driving.”, said Lahood.

Violators of the ban will face up to $2,750 in fines.

The National Safety Council has estimated that 200,000 crashes on U.S. roads are caused by drivers who are “texting.”

Government mandates such as this are paving the way for future technologies that will allow computers and cell phones to interface directly with the human brain and TechToaster will welcome such technology with open arms.

Kevin Parrish writes on tom’s guide:

Elastic Water could eventually replace plastic, or be used in an environmentally-safe plastic.

Bernama, a part of the Malaysian National News Agency, reports that Japanese scientists have created “elastic water.” Developed at the Tokyo University, the new material consists mostly of water — 95-percent — with an added two grams of clay and organic material. The resulting substance resembles jelly, but is extremely elastic and transparent.

The invention was originally revealed last week in the latest issue of the Nature scientific magazine. According to the article, the new material is quite safe for the environment and humans, and may be a “long-term” tool in medical technology, possibly to help wounded or surgically cut tissue to remain closed.

Intel Rage Quits

intel fails in the high end video card marketIntel gave up it’s hopes of breaking into the high end GPU market yesterday, when it announced that it would be halting production on it’s long-delayed consumer GPU, codenamed “Larrabee“.  Intel,  the worlds biggest chip manufacturer, has been working on the Larrabee platform for a number of years.  “Larrabee silicon and software development are behind where we had hoped to be at this point in the project,” said Nick Knuppfler, a spokesman for Intel in Santa Clara, Calif. “Larrabee will not be a consumer product.”

Although they have pulled the plug on the consumer version of Larrabee, Knuppfler said that Intel will continue to work on graphics chip designs.  He says that Intel will release more information on this in 2010.

Intel drew much praise and interest at the game developer conference last year when it released more info on the platforms architecture and performance.  The platform was touted as having dozens of processors on a single graphics card.
